Hillsong Worship released its debut album, “Power of Love,” in 1992. Since then, each new year has brought a new Hillsong Worship album. The latest is “There Is More,” the group’s 26th outing of its 26-year recording career.
Yet, Hillsong Worship isn’t just one of the most prolific acts in contemporary Christian music. The Australian group, which hails from Hillsong Church in Sydney, is also one of the genre’s most popular, having scored several hit albums and crafted numerous worship songs that are sung on Sundays around the globe.
Jim Harrington recently spoke with Hillsong Worship vocalist David Ware, calling from Australia, in preview of the Grammy-winning group’s There Is More Tour stop at the Event Center at San Jose State University on Oct. 29. This show, along with all the other stops on the tour, are now sold out!
Q: First off, can you help us understand the difference between all the different Hillsong groups – Hillsong Young & Free, Hillsong United and, of course, Hillsong Worship?
Ware: Young & Free is our youth expression. It came out of the youth ministries of the Hillsong Church. United came out of the youth ministry, maybe like 20 years ago. But they bring kind of a fresh and new sound.
Hillsong Worship is kind of the sound of our church. So that includes the pieces that are exclusively written for Hillsong Worship projects, but then will include some of the United songs and Young & Free songs.
