Billboard interviewed singer-songwriter Lauren Daigle in this week’s episode of “You Should Know,” chatting with her about what the first song she ever wrote was, who her biggest musical influences are, her friendship with Selena Gomez and more.
Daigle, who grew up in Lafayette, LA., tells Billboard that she penned her first-ever song at the age of 5. It was raining outside, she explains, and she saw dirt mixing with water to make mud. “Mom, it looks like chocolate milk,” she told her mother, who then suggested that she go in the house to write a song about chocolate milk.
The singer also shares that she has a wide range of musical inspirations, naming the likes of Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Amy Winehouse, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Adele, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald.
